Holy Trinity Swimmers Enjoy Inaugural Commonwealth Pool Opening

Six HTS students were thrilled to be invited to take part in the inaugural test swimming event at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Set to host all water-based events for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, 28 July to 8 August 2022, this state-of-the-art facility holds an 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool and cost £73million to build.

Holy Trinity was delighted to hear that so many of our talented pupils were selected to participate at such a prestigious event. Every swimming club in the West Midlands region was invited to take part, with the swimmers competing throughout the evening in a series of relay races. HTS students selected and representing their swimming clubs included Sophie C. for Halesowen, Jack P, Hugo G and Darcey G for Stourbridge, Alex P for Droitwich and Olivia W. for Halesowen.

Having a capacity of 5,000, the event’s supporters made sure they were heard and made as much noise as 10,000 people with the seven swimming clubs represented by Evesham, Halesowen, Ledbury & Malvern, Worcester, Droitwich, Stourbridge and Sandwell Aquatic 1 and 2. Thirty-three events, covering all strokes, and conducted under FINA and Swim England rules.

For many participants it would have been their first time in an Olympic-sized pool, with each swimmer relishing the opportunity to represent their individual club.

Headteacher, Mrs Leek-Wright, commented: “I am thrilled on behalf of our students for their selection, an acknowledgement of their commitment to swimming, evident in the many hours undertaken each week.

“Holy Trinity has a strong swimming tradition as we are fortunate to have a pool, and offer lessons as part of our curriculum provision, actively engaging in competitions both locally and nationally. What an absolute honour for everyone taking part and a long-lasting and positive legacy for the future.”
